A History Of Modbury Vista Soccer Club

The origins of Modbury Vista can be traced back to the formation of the Para Vista Junior Soccer Club in 1969 and playing in the Elizabeth and Districts Soccer Association for the first time in 1970. This club changed its name to Modbury Vista in 1973 and played its home games at Kelly Road in Modbury North. The senior team entered the Amateur League in 1975 and immediately won the Division 6 title. J Slager was outstanding winning both the Best and Fairest award and with 24 goals the Top Goal Scorer award. The team’s manager was one Bill Bailey who is now the Amateur League’s Chairman and life member. He continued with the club as Secretary for the next 4 years.

Success followed quickly as a top finish in 1976 followed by consecutive second places in 1977 and 1978 saw the club into Division 2 for 1979. That year the club changed its name to Modbury United and played at the Modbury Soccer Ground on Milne Road Modbury North.

In the year 1980 Modbury United was admitted into the South Australia Soccer Federation and their place in Division 2 in the Amateur League was assumed by the Para Vista Soccer Club playing at the Para Vista High School. This club finished 9th and were relegated. At the same time a club called Modbury United played in Division 6 at the Milne Road ground. This club disappeared in 1982.

Fortunes wained for the Para Vista club and it sank through the Amateur Leagues Divisions and it found itself in Division 5 for 1984.

The following year the name was changed back to Modbury Vista and unable to raise a Reserve team it was dropped to Division 7 in 1985 and Division 8 in 1986. The following year the club was unable to field a senior team and dropped out of the Amateur League altogether.

Modbury Vista was reborn in 1991 playing at Richardson Drive in Wynn Vale. It first came to notice when the clubs Reserves won the Division 7 title in 1992. The same year the 1st team came 8th in their league. Real success came the following year when under the coaching of J Walker the club fielded three teams and both the 1st team and Reserves topped their Division 7 Leagues respectively and the C team playing in Division 12 came 4th. Players of note that year included J Walker, S Pearson, C Fitzharris, S Wardle, S Gannon, A Pamula and B Johnston, who with 19 goals came second top scorer for the league.

1994 was also a successful year for the club and it now fielded 4 teams. The 1st team again tops the League in Division 6, as did the Reserves, and the team reached the semi-finals of the Newsfront Cup. S Gannon was outstanding coming second in the Best and Fairest count and L Sullivan (20 goals) was the Leagues Top Goals Scorer and S A Carlisle (16 goals) was second.

Billy Gray coached in 1995 as the club now in Division 5 continued its success. S Gannon again excelled, this time winning the Leagues Best and Fairest award with D Jackson coming second. I Pearson (12 goals) came third in the Top Goals Scores award and A Murray (6 goals) also did well. These efforts helped the club to second and another promotion.

In 1996 the club facing increasing talent in Division 4 could only manage 5th and the Reserves 6th. In the Division 12 team T Aitkinson had a good year winning the Best and Fairest award for that League and A Osborne (11 goals) was equal third Top Goal Scorer. Much the same followed in 1997 under the coaching of Brad French as the 1 st team and Reserves finished 5th and 7th respectively.

Stuart Gannon took over the coaching reins in 1998 and guides the 1st team to third in the league. Players contributing to this achievement were M James, M Smith, G Bartlett, D Thackray and many more. This was enough for promotion that year and the club was now in Division 3.

Last year Brian Nuttal coached the club and again the club finished third, which was again, enough to see the club promoted to Division 2. M James had a good year in front of goals managing to score 19 and coming third in the Top Goal Scorer award. In Division 10 I Smith won the Best and Fairest award for that league.
